Biography

Shakana Borders is a Fashion Designer and the founder of Kana Wear, a Design and Style Company. She now serves as a Sewing Instructor designer and Entrepreneur in Atlanta GA. Her birthplace of Jamaica Queens, NY is where her creativity of design and vision for fashion derives. She began creating hand crafted jewelry when she was in the sixth grade but as she developed her skills, she began her creations for custom jewelry and accessory design. A Wife, and Mother of five young leaders in “tow”. Shakana is an entrepreneur true to heart. She practices the 8 R’s of recycling not only in theory but in application by repurposing and upcycling many of the items she creates.

Her specialty lies in Custom Jewelry Design where she creates unique designs of her own or based on client specifications. She is known for her handcrafted jewelry among friends and family, but she also has developed her skills in Accessory and Apparel Design.

In 2006 she began selling her handcrafted jewelry at her church in Conyers GA and was named Teenage Entrepreneur of the Month in the Homebased Quarterly Magazine and Common Ground News Paper. Her pursuit to fine tune her craft lead to seeking higher education in Fashion Design and in 2012 she graduated in from Bauder College with an Associates of the Arts in Fashion Design. Four years later she obtained a certificate in Project Management from Georgia Tech, and in 2020 She completed her Bachelors of the Fine Arts in Fashion Design and Marketing.

Although Shakana's academic, and entrepreneurial achievements are intriguing, she values her family first and foremost. They continue to inspire and drive her to achieve more in business endeavors because of the love they all share. She's married to Victor Borders Jr and has five young leaders she instills her passion for hard work and entrepreneurial pursuits. Her two eldest children Anya (9) and Victor (6) help her in the practical day to day operation when she custom creates. Our future leaders are Anya, who acts as her assistant designer, Victor III, Faith, Nerissa, and David Borders. Shakana wants to expand her “empire” and leave a legacy to her children. She wants to inspire and teach them her “blueprint” to become unique, authentic, and confident.

Shakana has incredible aspirations for Kana Wear, and she aims to create collections that make every client and customer feel valuable. The Logo for Kana Wear is a symbol of a butterfly with hearts for wings because she believes in transformation from the inside out. “Be a new creature” is the slogan that was inspired from the scripture in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that says “Therefore If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Shakana hopes to inspire her clientele by being encouraging and helping them to feel just as beautiful on the outside as they should on the inside. In doing so she hopes to create clothes that are suitable for that type of self-expression, because she supports the beautification of all her clients from the inside out.
